A former Tennessee governor and U.S. congressman, Houston left Washington, D.C. for Texas in December of 1832. The presence of Tennesseeans and fellow masons Adolphus Sterne and Henry Raguet made Nacogdoches an agreeable place to settle. Houston boarded with the Sternes and soon set up a law practice.

Nacogdoches, pronounced nak-uh-DOAT-chuss, claims to be “The Oldest Town in Texas.” Founded in 1779 by Spanish Col. Antonio Gil Y’Barbo. However, its early settlers were members of the Caddo tribe. “E” should be pronounced eh or ee, but we say “ih” as in pin (pen) and tin (ten.) 8, 9, 10, yep, tin. Cowhouse Creek flows into Belton Lake and I hear was named after cattle huddling above the creek to protect each other from the cold, wind, or rain. #thenakedrancher #nakedrancher #ranch #ranchlife #n
