I've never played 43 lands in EDH myself, but my Dakkon Blackblade deck plays 40 lands plus 10ish cards that find land and it tends to run well.

May 10, 2011 · I normally start a deck with 39 lands, and then adjust accordingly. My mono white deck runs 36 lands, the only mana rock is Sol Ring, and I normally do just fine for mana. Conversely, my Glissa deck currently runs 35 lands and a bunch of ramp dudes. I'm still thinking about adding more lands, but I'll have to play it more to decide.

There are tons of $1-2 lands that provide utility that I'd choose over fetches (if forced to choose) any day. If fetches provide one of the above benefits, I'd run them.
