Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson declared that lawmakers and staff will have to use restrooms corresponding with their biological gender.

Nancy Mace vowed to “stand in the way” of Democratic Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, the first out transgender woman elected to Congress, using women’s bathrooms in the US Capitol. Across the building, McBride was privately counseling her Democratic colleagues how to balance both pushing back on dehumanizing rhetoric while also staying on message.

The G.O.P. speaker sided with hard-right members of his conference who called for blocking Representative-elect Sarah McBride, the first transgender member of Congress, from using Capitol women’s rooms.

That’s due to what House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has said — transgender women cannot use women’s restrooms in the Capitol and House office buildings, per a report on ABC News. The same holds true for changing rooms and locker rooms, Johnson said.

Del., the first openly transgender person elected to serve in Congress, on Sunday called House Republicans’ moves to ban her from using women’s bathrooms in the Capitol “mean-spirited” and an “attempt to misdirect” from other policy priorities.

"Every single time we hear them say the word 'trans,' look what they're doing with their right hand,” Rep.-elect Sarah McBride said.
