The Penguin has now kicked off on HBO, and the first episode of The Batman spin-off is a grisly return to the dark underworld of Gotham. It mostly focuses on Oz Cobb's new bid for power following Carmine Falcone's death, but there is a little subtle tease in there for fans of Matt Reeves' movie.

Matt Reeves explained why Robert Pattinson, who played Batman in the same world, doesn't appear. "The Penguin" is the second project set within Matt Reeves' grim, violent take on the DC universe, following 2022's " The Batman " which starred Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and Batman.

The Batman brought a grungey new take on DC's Dark Knight and reopened Gotham City for business, HBO's The Penguin is back to remind us all why we loved that movie so much. That episode 1 achieves that while expanding the world and turning the light of the Bat Signal onto Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb without Robert Pattinson's Bat is a hugely impressive start.
