Gabriel P. Hernandez, 37, attempted to rape an 11-year-old girl 18 years before he was accused of committing rape and sodomy in an Overland Park home, according to New York court documents.

The sexual assault happened in a home near W. 97th Street and Reeder at around 2:40 Tuesday morning. The victim didn’t know the suspect, who was later caught on surveillance camera at a convenience store.

Overland Park Police Chief Doreen Jokerst thanked the community, department members, and various agencies for their help.
