Israel’s peace deal with Lebanon is not likely to trigger a similar agreement between Israel and Gaza, according to the UK’s former minister for the Middle East. After 13 months of fighting between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah – and two months after Israeli troops invaded Lebanon – the neighbouring countries finally agreed to a ceasefire last night.

Those divisions drive Israel’s ­genocidal logic. Despite ceasefire talks, Israel continues to bombard Lebanon. Over the weekend, Israel murdered at least 29 people in the capital Beirut. Hezbollah responded, firing over 340 rockets into Israel.

Under the terms of the deal, Israel will gradually withdraw from Lebanon, while Hezbollah isn’t allowed to rebuild near the border. But will the ceasefire hold?
