BRANDON, Miss. (WTVA) — A teenage girl received a life in prison sentence for killing her mother in central Mississippi. A Rankin County jury found Carly Gregg, 15, guilty on Friday, Sept 20 of first-degree murder, attempted murder and tampering with evidence, WLBT-TV in Jackson reported.

A Rankin County jury began deliberating around 10:30 a.m. Friday on whether Carly Gregg is guilty of murdering her mom and two additional charges.

This following a dramatic week-long trial revolving around the 15-year-old Gregg, who shot and killed her mother, Ashley Smylie, in March of this year.

Closing arguments will begin on Friday, September 20 in the trial of the Rankin County teen accused of killing her mother. On Thursday, the state brought forth expert witnesses in rebuttal. They said there were contradictions in Carly Gregg’s story after her arrest in March 2024.
