The repeated volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula have damaged infrastructure and property in nearby town Grindavík and forced many residents to relocate for their safety.

Access to an iconic Icelandic tourist attraction is now “mostly” submerged in lava, according to The Iceland Monitor, after the Reykjanes Peninsula volcano erupted for the seventh time in under 12 months.

Though the eruption is “significantly smaller” than the last eruption, experts said the latest volcanic activity can still “cause problems.”

The resort said it has evacuated visitors and suspended operations across its facilities as a precautionary measure at least through Nov. 24.

Known as Reykjanes for its position on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the volcano is classified as a rift activity volcano, which erupts when two diverging tectonic plates shift away from each other. The Reykjanes Peninsula is a part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge,
