Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday secured European Parliament backing for her new team at the European Commission, paving the way for her to take office at the start of next month amid mounting challenges in Europe and across the Atlantic.

The new commission was supported by 370 MEPs, with 282 voting against, out of a total of 688 lawmakers. Marta Kos, a politician and diplomat from Slovenia, has been appointed as the European Commissioner for Enlargement,
