Iceland’s Blue Lagoon thermal spa has been forced to close as lava from a fresh volcanic eruption reached its car park. The Icelandic Met Office confirmed that lava has never flowed this in the southwest of the country. The eruption began late on Wednesday, creating a 3km-wide fissure, with lava flowing at a rate of 100 metres per hour.

Lava flowing from Iceland's latest volcanic eruption on Thursday engulfed the main parking lot of one of Iceland's biggest tourist attractions, the evacuated Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, images showed.

The resort said it has evacuated visitors and suspended operations across its facilities as a precautionary measure at least through Nov. 24.

A road to the world-famous Icelandic attraction was also damaged, as a nearby volcano erupted for the seventh time in less than a year.
