Chinese auto manufacturer BYD says it has developed technology that speeds up electric vehicle battery charging to as little as 5 minutes at 1,000 kilowatts, providing enough energy for nearly 250 miles of driving.

Chinese electric car giant BYD has unveiled new battery technology it says will overcome one of the biggest criticisms levelled at EVs. The world's biggest electric car manufacturer overnight revealed its 'Super e-Platform' using the latest lithium-ion-phosphate Blade battery technology that it claims can charge at speeds of up to 1,000kW.

One of the biggest hurdles to mass EV adoption globally has been charging speeds. Long charging times have deterred potential buyers who are accustomed to the convenience of refueling gasoline-powered cars in a few minutes.
