An errant weight thrown by a competitor in a hammer throw event struck and killed a spectator at a youth track and field meet in Colorado, according to officials at the university where the competition was held.

The fatal incident occurred at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse on the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs campus around 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

The man killed by a flying weight thrown off-course during a Sunday high school track-and-field meet in Colorado Springs was a 57-year-old father there to watch his son compete, El Paso County coroner officials said.
