The Game Awards is almost upon us, and six new games find themselves duking it out in the Game of the Year category, but there can only be one winner.

This was the main takeaway from Monday’s nominations list. TGA’s voting jury is large and internationally diverse, and in the past its collective taste has tended to settle in a rather conservative place. But the industry’s lean year has led the jury to a suite of nominees that is varied, high-quality, and culturally rich.

The Game Awards’ Game of the Year (GOTY) category is highly-contested year after year, and 2024 is no exception. With the list of nominated games being limited to a mere six titles, plenty of games didn’t have a chance to vie for the coveted GOTY trophy – but there are a few massive snubs we can’t help but puzzle at this year.

In a livestream Tuesday, the inaugural Indie Game Awards — a new awards show focused on “creativity, innovation, and passion” in the independent games space — announced its 2024 nominees for a slate of awards including Debut Game, Bite-Sized Game, Solo Development, and of course, Game of the Year.
