The NTSB’s decision to open a formal investigation into a December 2023 bird strike involving a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 will add scrutiny to the rarely needed safety device triggered during the incident that some FAA experts and pilots believe creates unacceptable risk.

The FAA evaluated bird strike concerns on Boeing 737 MAX engines, opting not to require immediate action. The review board found no urgent issue, though further assessments and procedure amendments are being considered.

The Federal Aviation Administration said late Thursday it will convene a review board in the coming weeks to address safety concerns with the CFM LEAP-1B engines on Boeing (NYSE:BA) 737 MAX jets after two bird strike incidents on Southwest Airlines flights last year.

The FAA Corrective Action Review Board, after reviewing the CFM LEAP-1B engine bird strikes, which eventually led to smoke entering the aircrafts, said that the issue does not warrant an immediate action. The agency will therefore follow standard regulatory processes to address them, Reuters reported.

A technical review by the FAA decided the risk from an engine vulnerability does not warrant immediate action, contrary to an internal report last month.
