The Providence Public School District (PPSD) and the U.S. Department of Justice have reached a settlement agreement that resolves an investigation into the district’s language instruction services for new immigrant English learners.

The Providence public school district has agreed to settle a case with the US Department of Justice regarding the Newcomer Academy, a high school for new immigrants over the age of 17, that was found to be violating students’ civil rights earlier this year.

Today on 12 News at 4, Boston Globe Rhode Island reporter Steph Machado joined Kim Kalunian to share the outcome of a case involving the civil rights of multilingual learners in Providence.

The closure is just the latest cutback at the 195-year old newspaper, which in recent years has laid off staff, trimmed benefits, and lost thousands of readers under the ownership of Gannett.
