'YMCA' is a gay anthem - even if its co-writer didn't write it that way
Though not all of its members were actually gay, Village People were quite literally built from queer iconography. The leather man, construction worker, cowboy and other “macho types” weren’t random costumes – they were walking embodiments of gay male fantasy archetypes, recruited from New York gay clubs.
