To open a kml file in Google Earth for web it needs to be stored locally on your computer. You can use the "New" button and select "Local kml file", or you can use "Import kml/kmz file" in the File menu. Is this how you tried to open the file?

offline functionality Hi, Community, I have some kml files (polygon and point for labels) that I would like to make accessible to those who work remotely in the field. They would not have internet access all the time. Would Google Earth be able to pull up the kml file on their laptop while offline?
