The EOTech XPS 3-2 has a reported battery life of 600 hours on setting # 12, which is the standard setting when you turn on the EOTech. So in theory, if I turn on the EOTech XPS 3-2 everyday using the 8-hour setting, the battery should last me 75 straight days. I have begun the battery test on 12-18-09 and I haven't missed a day yet.
Re: ACOG OR EOTECH for CQB? No question the EOtech is #1 in purely CQB environments. IMO the Aimpoint at least the Army issued ones suck ass. The point of aim changes as you shift your angle of view without moving the weapon. The acog is a good piece of gear, it's just outclassed by the EOtech when it comes to purely CQB comparison.
The EoTech is naturally going to have more technical issues than an ACOG because it's a more complex design. Still, the EoTech is a good reflexive shooting tool. I'd have both, in all honesty. EoTech for CQB and room-clearing and ACOG for patrolling. In A-stan, no question I'd rather have an ACOG than an EoTech.
@DeathBeforeDismount speaks very highly of the Eotech Vudu 1-10x I haven't tried one yet, myself but plan to once I manage to sell some other stuff. Then of course there is the nightforce if we want to break your request to not "just add another $300)"...

I have an EOTech on my old patrol rifle because my Dept had a "no magnified optics" policy unless it was on a precision rifle. For LE purposes the EOTech was great. Overseas it was too one-dimensional with the distances in Afgh. The ACOG was great until it wasn't. It suffered from the same one-dimensionality problems plus the eye relief sucked.
Eotech halo sights will shut down in 4 hrs if you used the DOWN button to turn on and did not make any brightness adjustments. 8 hours to shut down if you used the UP button to turn on.
